Abstract     Background. Chronic urticaria is a common and troublesome disease. The etiology is recognized in a minority of cases. An autoallergic reaction seems to have an important role in a mast cell degranulation. Patients and methods. Medical files of eighty patients with chronic urticaria were reviewed. Results of routine laboratory tests, skin prick tests and autoallergy tests were included in the analysis. Results. 48% of patients were atopics. Autoallergy was evenly distributed between atopics and nonatopics. One third of patients had laboratory evidence of thyroid autoimmunity. Conclusions. In this study, we found high prevalence of atopy in patients with chronic urticaria. Autoatlergy is important in the pathogenesis of chronic urticaria regardless of atopy.
