Abstract     Prompted by the alarming figures of increased incidence of cervical adenocarcinoma (AC) reported by the Slovenian Cancer Registry, the screening histories, clinical and histological data as well as the treatment modalities of 81 women with AC diagnosed and treated at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Ljubljana during the last 4 years, were analysed. In 51 (63%) cases, AC was found in age younger than 46 years. The peak incidence was in the age group 41-45 years (19.7%). Among the 47 asymptomatic patients, screened at 1- to 3-year intervals, 30 (63.8%) cases were found in the early stage (stage 0 and IA). The present data are important in the evaluation of the effectiveness and quality of our cytological screening in the detection of preinvasive cervical ACs. With the improved sensitivity for early glandular abnormalities, cytological screening could be considered as an effective method in the detection of preclinical stages of cervical ACs.
