Abstract     Introduction. Slovenia has seen pronounced political and social changes over the past decade. However, changes in the field of health care were relatively conservative, since it was of common agreement that it is too delicate a structure to be transformed on a short-term basis. Objectives. Medical and dental manpower planning was traditionally a matter of "pragmatic" policies and not much long-term strategy or methodology were used to steer it. The roles of the traditional stakeholders in the process of medical and dental manpower planning have changed and new stakeholders have appeared. The objectives of this paper are to review the current position of Slovenia as compared to some EU member states and other CEE countries, to display the present quantitative and qualitative situation in the field and to analyse the positions of the stakeholders involved. Material and methods. Data were collected from several sources and were of a varied nature: numeric data about the trends in the number of physicians' and dentists' in Slovenia, together with the current manpower situation, intemational comparisons with a selected number of countries, interviews with stakeholders involved in the process of medical and dental manpower planning. Results. Slovenia has followed a restrictive medical and dental manpower policy over the past decades. With the present 230 physicians and 65 dentists per 100,000 population in 1998, it falls into the lower third of European countries as ranked by number of physicians and somewhere in the middle by number of dentists.
