Abstract		An acute haemarthrosis of the knee, without gross joint laxity has often been considered benign. This opinion was based on clinical and radiological examination. Arthroscopic studies have reported that a traumatic hemarthrosis indicates a significant injury to intra-articular structures in children and adults. Accurate diagnosis of injury to joint structures is required for a rational treatment program to be outlined. Reviewing the literature authors describe effect of intraarticular bleeding on cartilage, present data about intraarticular injuries in hemarthrosis and discuss diagnostic methods in evaluation of acute traumatic hemarthrosis of the knee.
