Abstract | Haemophilus influenzae type b is the most common cause of invasive bacterial infections in children under 5 years of age. The most frequent forms of these infections are meningitis, epiglottitis, pneumonia, bacteremia, cellulitis, arthritis and osteomyelitis. The average mortality of H. influenzae type b meningitis is 3,8%, sequelae include hearing loss in 10,2%, convulsions in 6,1%, motor deficits in 5,1% and mental retardation in 6,1% of survivors. In the eighties effective vaccines against invasive H. influenzae type b infections were developed. In the last decade H. influenzae type b vaccination was introduced in routine childhood immunisation programmes in the majority of west European countries and in the United States. Due to a relatively costly price of the economic analyses of H. influenzae type b vaccination were performed before the intoduction of the vaccine in many countries. The aim of the present study was to assess the medical and economical impact of invasive H. influenzae type b infections in Slovenia. All 35 children who survived H. influenzae type b meningitis in Slovenia from 1993 to 1995 were included in the study, and 32 (91,4%) were examined for the presenc of sequelae. Severe neurologic sequelae were present in one (3,1%) child, mild sequelae were found in two (6,3%). Hearing loss was found in four (12,5%) children. Since hearing loss was first detected in two of these children at the time of investigation, we believe that hearing should be routinely assessed in all children after H. influenzae type b meningitis. Mental retardation was found in five (15,6%) children. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters). | |
