Abstract     As it is already known, a comparison of the general population with the psychiatric population shows that there is a higher degree of suicidal threat with the latter. The factors predicting the occurrence of suicide in psychiatric hospitals are less known. The purpose of this research was to check the observation and to estimate the activities before a suicidal act of an in-patient and so define the factors important in this act. For the period 1984-93 I chose all the patients who commited suicide during their hospitalization in Ljubljana, at the University Centre for Psychiatry (UPK). I found a control group of patients for the patients having the most frequent diagnoses (schizophrenia and affective psychosis). The control group did not commit suicide but it was aged, sex and diagnosis matched with suicidal people (SO). I made up a questionnare for the research which was answered by means of the data taken from the files (SP) and interviews hold with the control patients. I collected demographic, social and clinical data (about disease, preliminary suicidal attempts, patient's personality characteristics). The adta were analysed with a t test, chi-square test and logistic regression. In the observation period 79 patients commited suicide during their hospitalization, among them 45 females and 34 males. The patients suffering from schizophrenic and affective psychosis were treated in detail. 36 patients (20 males and 16 females) were suffering from schizophrenic psychosis and 23 patients (6males and 17 females) from affective psychosis. 59 patients in all had these diagnoses, while 20 patients (8 males and 12 females) had other diagnoses. The coefficient of suicide is 243 and 2,43 suicides per 1000 admissions respectively. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
