Abstract     Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is currently recognized as the leading cause of congenital viral infection, involving 0,5 -2,4 % of all live births. Although the majority of CMV infected newborns are completely asymptomatic at birth, some will have signs of congenital infection. The authors present two cases of congenital CMV infection with quite different clinical picture in the neonatal period. Clinical picture of congenital CMV infection disease and the diagnostic methods are presented. Because asymptomatic congenital CMV infection is an important cause of sensorineural hearing loss and of mental retardation the importance of congenital CMV infection after neonatal period is stressed.
