Abstract     The incidence of genital herpes simplex virus (HSV) and neonatal HSV infection is increasing especially in developed countries. Since it has remained a life-threatening condition in the newborn, it is essential that perinatologists recognize even subtle clinical signs, as well as more obvious cutaneous or neurologic changes that are compatible with neonatal HSV infection. Appropriate diagnostic evaluation should be considered and prompt treatment introduced. Value of drugs such as vidarabine and acyclovir has been established in improving the outcome in neonatal infection. However, the emphasis for future programs is in prevention of HSV infections to avoid transmission either horizontally or vertically. The development of safe and efficacious vaccines may be of value toward this goal.
