Abstract     Fibrinolytic system during pregnancy was studied in plasma of 36 pregnant women (18 normal secundiparas and 18 with gestational hypertension). 29 age-matched, nonpregnant women served as controls. Blood samples were obtained in basal conditions and after 20-minutes upper arm venous occlusion (VO) during the 17th and 35th week of pregnancy and 3 days after delivery. During labour and 1 hour after it only resting samples were collected. In the controls blood was collected once before VO and after it. In the 35. week of pregnancy were fibrinolytic potential (euglobulin clotlysis time) and tissue plasminogen activator activity (t-PA activity, spectrophotometric assay) after VO significantly lower than in controls (p<0.05 and p<0.01). Concentration of the t-PA antigen (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay) was in the 17th week of pregnancy comparable to the controls (medians 3.9 and 3.7 ng/ml), then steadily increased (p<0.001) up to 1 hour after delivery (median 9.1 ng/ml). t-PA antigen increased after VO in the controls 3.5-fold, in the 35. week of pregnancy 5-fold, and 3 days after delivery 8-fold (p<0.005 in comparison with controls). Urokinase (radioimmunoassay) increased during pregnancy 4-fold, plasminogen activator inhibitors activity (PAI activity, amidolytic assay) 3-fold, and PAI-1 antigen (radioimmunoassay) 3-fold. PAI-2 antigen was in controls below the detection limit (radioitnmunoassay), but at the delivery its level was 5-fold that of PAI-l. One hour after delivery were PAI activity (median G.6 IU/ml) and PAI-1 antigen (median 26 ng/ml) comparable to the controls (medians 7.6 IU/ml and 24 ng/ml). (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters.)
