Abstract     The aim of the present study was to find out which equipment has been prescribed to elderly stroke survivors and elderly after trans-femoral amputation, which of the prescribed equpment subjects really use at home, and whether it is possible to improve their independence by other assistative technology tools. Occupational therapy students from the College for health studies in Ljubljana visited 25 subjects after tranfemoral amputation and 27 subjects after stroke. All of the subjects were over 65 years old. We found out than the subjects after lower limb amputation have and need fewer tools than the subjects after stroke. In both groups, we could improve their independence by additional tools. We also found that some subjects did not use prescribed tools because they did not do the task at home, or because condition omproved, or because the tool was broken. If an occupational therapist visited a patient's home, he could better assess the need fot different equipment. An occupational therapist also has to do regular check-ups at a patient's home to see whether all the tools are still working, and if the condition changes, to advise or prescribe new equipment that may improve the patient's independence.
