Abstract     Background. Ultrasound - guided percutaneous renal biopsy with an automated spring - loaded biopsy device has also become a standard procedure in children and adolescents. If contraindications, especially high blood pressure and abnormal haemostasis are respected, the mentioned procedure is safe. In almost all cases skilled operators obtain a satisfactory amount of kidney tissue for pathohistological tests. Ultrasound - guided percutaneous renal biopsy with an automated spring - loaded biopsy device has been used in the Nephrology department of University Children's Hospital, Ljubljana since 1994. Purpose of the study. The purpose of the study was to establish: the complication rate after renal biopsy, if certain risk factors were involved in complications, what the indications for renal biopsy were, adequacy of renal tissue for pathohistological diagnoses, the rate of agreement between the clinical and pathohistological diagnoses and the benefits of renal biopsy to the patient. Patients and methods. Data on 88 renal biopsies in 82 children and adolescents to whom renal biopsy was applied in the Nephrology department of University Children's Hospital, Ljubljana from January 1994 to October 1999 were analysed in our retrospective study. General data on the patients were obtained. Complications after renal biopsy and possible risk factors causing them were listed as well as indications for renal biopsy. Adequacy of renal tissue was evaluated. Data concerning agreement between clinical and pathohistological diagnoses were set out and so was the benefit score of renal biopsy for patients.
