Abstract		The recognitis of potential toxicity of surface runoff from highways brought to numerous suggestions of management, prevention and treatment of this pollution before release into final recipient. The design for protection of surface and subsurface water should base on the kind of pollution and vulnerability evaluation of the territory. A lot of researches confirm occasional high concentrations of lead, chromium and zinc in the soil along the highways. Therefore the development goes in the direction of treatment improvement and exposion of highway surface run-off to slow biological filters, pounds with plants (reed ponds), ponds with percolation, plant filters and constructed wetlands, as the ability of the soil and plants is to immobilize toxic compounds (heavy metals).
