Abstract     In a group of 20 beagle dogs with experimentally induced periodontitis, the progress of the condition and its response to treatment was followed with the use of conventional visual radiography (CVR) and digital subtraction radiography (DSR). The aim of the study was to compare the diagnostic value of the two methods. CVR proved to be slightly less accurate than DSR in the interradicular area, where personal interpretation of conventional radiograms did not provide objective information on alveolar bone loss or gain. Compared to DSR, CVR detected more bone loss or gain on the mesial aspect of teeth (p<0.01) and less bone gain on the distal aspect of teeth (p<0:01) in both the upper and the lower jaw. The results indicate that CVR is still sufficiently reliable for daily clinical use, but DSR is more precise in detecting small osseous changes and more appropriate for long-term prospective studies. The use of intra-oral sensors, providing direct digitalisation of images, makes DSR suitable for daily work in the dental office.
