Abstract		The incidence of sexually transmitted infections has been increasing worldwide. Nowadays, in addition to chlamydial infections, the human papilloma virus and genital herpes infections are the most common infections of this kind. Advanced diagnostic techniques and an improved epidemiological surveillance have revealed newly recognised clinical syndromes as the complications of untreated or poorly treated primary sexually transmitted infections. In addition to the infected person, the spread of infection to the sexual partner and fetus or neonate may cause serious complications and even death. This review focuses on the most common complications of clinically significant sexually transmitted infections and recent developments in the areas of diagnosis, treatment and prophylaxis.
Summary		Spolno prenosljive okužbe so v porastu povsod po svetu. Okužba s humanim papilomavirusom in genitalni herpes sta ob okužbi s klamidijo trahomatis najpogostejši tovrstni okužbi. Razvoj diagnostičnih metod in boljši epidemiološki nadzor sta botrovala odkritju številnih kliničnih sindromov, ki jih spolno prenosljive okužbe povzročajo kot zaplet po primarni nezdravljeni ali slabo zdravljeni okužbi. Poleg prizadete okužene osebe jih lahko najdemo tudi pri okuženem spolnem partnerju, z noseče okužene žene pa se okužba z možnimi zapleti prenese tudi na plod oz. novorojenca. Prikazani so pomembnejši zapleti najpogostejših klinično pomembnih spolno prenosljivih okužb v povezavi z novostmi pri njihovem odkrivanju, zdravljenju in preprečevanju.
