Abstract     Constipation can simply be defined as the infrequent and difficult passage of stool. It afflicts many people in the Western world, and older adults are five times more likely than younger ones to report problems with constipation. Poor diet, insufficient intake of fluids, lack of exercise, concommitant diseases and the use of certain drugs can result in constipation. Constipation is a common reason for consultation in primary care and the management is often simple and successful without the need for further investigation or long-term use of medications.
