Abstract     Even in the absence of renal disease, structural and functional changes occur in the kidneys of the elderly. The renal mass decreases, sclerosis of preglomerular vessels occurs, the mesangial volume increases and the glomerular membrane thickens, glomerular filtration and plasma flow decrease, postglomerular vascular resistance increases. In the elderly, the water content of the body is decreased. The most frequent renal diseases of old age are: membranous glomerulonephritis, nephropathy in type II diabetes, nephrosclerosis, ischemic renal disease and amyloidosis.
