Abstract     The objective of this retrospective study was to review the data on the transport of the critically ill newborns to the Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (NPICU) of the University Medical Centre Ljubljana for the period between 1976-1999, and to discuss the impact of this transport on mortality in the NPICU and, together with the transport in utero, on the perinatal mortality in Slovenia. Between 1976 and 1999, 3276 newborns were transported to the University Medical Centre by the intensive care team. Six/3276 newborns only died during transport. After the introduction of neonatal transport the mortality rate in the NPICU decreased from 35 to 15%. Specialized neonatal transport, together with transport in utero (introduced in 1984) contributed to the reduction of perinatal mortality rate in Slovenia from 25.6 in 1976 to 5.8/1000 in 1998 (for newborns with birth weight >1000g).
