Abstract     Since time immemorial, Slovene tales have born witness to a popular view of pregnancy, delivery and postpartal period as mysterious phenomena. The position of the "wise women" has changed considerably through the centuries, but a midwife has always taken care of the pregnant woman, the baby and the family. With the foundations of one of the oldest European midwifery schools in Ljubljana in 1753, midwives obtained formal education; in the following decades the duration and programme of training have changed and expanded. Following a successful reformation af health care after World War II, the number of deliveries in maternity hospitals began to grow. Midwives perform their active role during pregnancy, delivery and postpartal period in maternity hospitals, health care centres and in homes. Midwifery in Slovenia suffered a great loss with the abolishment of the Midwifery School in 1984. The new generation of graduated midwifes are facing a long and difficult path to the establishment and autonomy of a midwifery profession.
