Abstract     Pregnancy itself is a psychological stress, which can help a woman to improve her personality, but in some embarrassing circumstances a kind of regression or psychological pathology may appear. It is widely known that a woman in this period is emotionally labile and sensitive to any scaring information and rumours. Even a healthy pregnant woman can develop various conscious and unconscious fears and worries-about unknown events, malformation of the fetus, pain. The rate of adaptation to this changed mental activity depends primarily on her personal maturity, but the importance of outer factors impacts on her psychological health should not be neglected. The prenatal care in Slovenia initially provides for the mothers and the babys physical well-being, but its influence on their psychological state is not always positive. In the world flooded with a huge number of various information, and at the time of routine procedures in prenatal and postnatal care, many women are worried and confused because of inaccurate or incomprehensible information, insufficient attention and psychological help when they find themselves in a difficult situation. In prenatal care, more attention should be paid to the mental well-being of a pregnant woman, because emotional and mental tensions not only diminish the quality of her life, but they can also seriously affect fetal development and the course of pregnancy, delivery and finally the postnatal period. A healthy pregnant woman does not need to be examined as much as she needs talk, attention and psychological security in her relationship with a professional that she knows and whom she trusts.
