Abstract     As we are unable in emergency to identify patients who will be difficult to intubate, an alternative approach to airway management is required. The ASA developed guidelines, in the form of an algorithm, for management of the airway. Orotracheal intubation using direct laryngoscopy remains the "gold standard" of airway control. If intubation is difficult or impossible the priority is to maintain oxygenation until intubation or an alternative approach to airway has been achieved or spontaneous ventilation returns. The technique used depends on the urgency, and above all, on the experience of the operator.
