Abstract     Technical properties and working principle of the pulse oximetry and capnography is described. Importance of both devices in patient management and patient monitoring is highlighted, especially early recognition of the hypoxia. Interpretation of values measured by pulse oximetry and capnography, in the different clinical settings is explained. At the end, author is warning us against technical insufficiency, which can cause faulty readings in both devices. Inadequate understanding of the role of one or the other device in monitoring of the oxygenation and ventilation, can cause wrong estimation of patient status and wrong management.
