Abstract     Checking for presence of an effective heart rhythm and recognition of different arrhythmias are very important in emergency medicine. However, there are numerous pitfalls that can lead to an erroneous assessment, wrong decision, inappropriate treatment, and deterioration of patient's condition. One can make a mistake already while checking for a pulse, however more emphasis is focused on pitfalls connected with use of monitors, ECG machines, and pace-makers. We need to check and verify our perceptions and findings continously so as to avoid making mistakes. Complex patient assessment cannot be overemphasised. There is a saying that we should treat the patient, not the monitor.
