Abstract     Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is a rare but potentially life threatening adverse effect of antipsychotic therapy. The clinical features of the classic syndrome present a tetrad of fever, rigidity, autonomic dysfunction and altered levels of consciousness. The clinical course of NMS depends largely upon early recognition and immediate withdrawal of antipsychotic drugs followed by symptomatic and supportive measures. Specific treatment is usually essential and includes the use of bromocriptine and dantrolene.
