Abstract     Despite modern methods for diagnosis, pulmonary embolism (PE) remains underdiagnosed. Mortality rate remains high due to recurrent PE. The aim of our study was to assess detection rate and use of different diagnostic tools in the emergency department. 31 patients presented to emergency department and eventually proven of having PE were retrospectively studied. Results were compared to the International cooperative pulmonary embolism registry (ICOPER): Our findings suggest that patients with severe PE are identified. Men with minor PE are likely to remain under-diagnosed. Data also suggest that pulmonary angiography is indicated in at least 40 patients with suspected PE in Slovenia annually.
