Abstract     Echocardiography has been successfully used in emergency medicine so far. In the last few years clinicians have used echocardiography also during resuscitation in emergency department and in intensive care units. The aim of echocardiography during resuscitation is to establish the cause of circulatory arrest, and to monitor patient's condition during and after resuscitation. Echocardiographic finding can change the resuscitation procedure and indicate specific procedures for treatment of cause of heart arrest. Echocardiographic finding often indicates additional procedures, that may increase success of resuscitation. In addition, echocardiography is more accurate in the assessment of mechanical heart function than palpation of femoral and radial pulses, which is routinely used for diagnosis of electromechanical dissociation. Assessment of heart function after successful resuscitation predicts hemodynamic stability of the patient. Finally, echocardiography is sometimes helpful in the assessment of futility of resuscitation in terminally ill patients.
