Abstract     There is a difference between near drowning rescue in organised swimming areas and non organised swimming areas, which offer no organised security to the swimmers. In organised swimming area there is a trained lifeguard on the spot. He rescues near drowning patient and starts with basic life support when needed. In the case of near drowning in the non organised swimming areas the first help to the near drowning patient is usually lay person (eye witness). Professional rescue team usually comes late and it is not well organised, so successful near drowning rescues are unfortunately rare. Good co-operation between at least to services Emergency Medical Service and Fire Service is essential for efficient near drowning rescues. Members of EMS rescue team provide medical help to the patient. Most members of Fire Service rescue team are trained divers. Their role is to locate and come to the near drowning patient, start basic life support in the water and bring the patient to the shore, where EMS rescue team continues the assessment and management of the patient. In Slovenia there has to be done some more efforts to organise professional drowning rescue, to assure short response time (time of call receipt to the time to arrival at the patients side) and to provide appropriate rescue equipment.
