Abstract     Constructed wetlands (CWs) are used for treating a wide variety of wastewaters. The implementation of this low-technology includes treatment of domestic sewage from rural areas, small settlements, summer resorts, protected areas, agricultural run-off, different kinds of industrial wastewater, as well as discharges from mine-tallings. CWs are successfully used for removal of nutrients from the secondary effluent and storm sewage treatment. Systems show a good treatment performance even during winter in temperate and cold regions. In a paper the basic technology is explained with the diversity of the systems mainly applied and the removal mechanism. Some data on a design and a construction of selected systems from Slovenia are presented along with their performance and efficiency.
