Abstract     Actinomycosis is a disease caused by Gram positive bacteria, in humans predominantly by Actinomyces israelii. The organism produces granulomatous inflammation that develops only after penetration through the mucosal barrier. The nasopharynx is rarely involved and the disease is therefore frequently overlooked. It is confirmed by positive cultures, identification of sulfur granules and pathohistological examination. The treatment consists of surgical excision of inflammed tissue, followed by mandatory antibiotic therapy that must be continued for several months.
