Abstract     Three periodontal dressings, Peripac, Barricaid and Fittydent, were evaluated to determine their suitability for use following flap operations. Undressed regions were used for control. The severity of gingival inflammation was assessed prior to flap surgery and two weeks, one month and two months after the procedure. Pocket depth and clinical attachment level were measured with a Williams periodontal probe at baseline and one and two months after the procedure. A questionnaire was employed to determine the amount of postoperative discomfort and pain experienced by the patient. Cytotoxicity of the dressing 4, 24 and 48 hours after application was evaluated on a cell culture of fibroblasts. Comparison of dressed and undressed areas revealed no significant differences in the degree of gingival inflammation, pocket depth and clinical attachment level. Most patients preferred to have no dressing on their wounds. Of the three dressings tested, Peripac showed the highest cytotoxicity.
