Abstract     The pattern for this research were suicides in the township of Ptuj in the period between 1978 - 1987. Basic aim was the attempt to objectify the frequency and the motivating causes, as well as the relation between the genders of the people, who committed suicide. The basic sources of information were gathered from documentation of the Centre for suicide prevention of Slovenia, Ministry for internal affairs of Slovenia, Public prosecutions, registry offices, health centres, mental hospitals and in conversations with families and other close connected persons from the suicides surroundings. There were 286 suicides committed in the township of Ptuj in that period, researched was on the suicides, with the dwelling in this township. Men committed suicide three times more often in relation to women. The most threatened group is between 50 - 59 years of age by the both of genders, followed by the group between 40 - 49 years. The most numerous suicides are from the suburbs ( 86,01 % ), the largest group worked in agriculture ( 29,7 % ). From the economic view is the most numerous average population with 59,44 % of the suicides, the largest group of them had a low education level ( 29 04 % ). Married people are the most numerous (58,04 %), followed by the singles. In the widowed group women committed suicide essentially more often than men. 20,97 % of the suicides had a hard physical disease or were invalids, alcoholism and mental diseases connected with alcoholism were confirmed in 36,36 % of the cases, where man are twice more numerous than women. 29,02 % of the suicides were under the influence of alcohol while committing a suicide, but probably determined number from the unknown group could be added. Only 11,88 % of them were hospital treated for alcoholism. Other mental diseases were known in 2,76 % of the cases. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
