Abstract     In this paper the distribution of macrophytes in three largest rivers in Slovenia is presented. The rivers have different character due to their length, with, current velocity, type of substratum, catchment and land-use pattern beyond the riparian zone. These contrasting environmental conditions result in different macrophytes composition and distribution in the rivers as well as among stretches alonf the flow. Macrophytes in the River Sava were scarce because of high current velocity and therefore unsuitable type of substratum. There were 29 macrophyte species determined in the river Sava, but majority of them (17) were riparian. In the river Kolpa, macrophytes were more abundant, especially from the middle part to its oitflow into the river Sava downstream. We found 17 macrophyte species. The river Krka showed the greatest variety of macrophytes (28) in its entire flow because of flow current velocity and suitable type of substratum.
