Abstract     Aim : the study concerned breakdown of main causes of medical incapacities among professional drivers. Methodology: workers having a professional driving licence sent by a practitionner to the occupational health department of Champagne county for an aptitude test were recorded. The studying period ran from the 1st January 1991 to the 30th June 1999. The main causes of medical incapacities to drive were investigated in accordance to the vehicle class. Results : during the last nine years, 2221 patients had taken medica! advices at occupational health department of Champagne area. One hundred and twenty two of them had medica! incapacities to drive. Main causes concerned neurological diseases (27,8 %) (including on equal terms epilepsy and neurological deficiencies) and locomotor disorders (28,7 %). Eyesight deficiencies (11,5 %) and psychiatric diseases (8,2 %) held respectively the third and the fourth position. Deafness (3,3 %), diabetes (5,7 %), cardiac (7,4 %), and alcoholic diseases were less numerous. Heavy goods drivers (51,6 %), bus drivers (11,5 %) and fork-lift truck drivers (10,6 %) were principally involved. Conclusion: more than five percent of the whole incapacities for work concerned professional drivers. An early and efficient screening of these medical deficiencies was required for traffic safety.
