Abstract     Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome has so far been defined as a lifelong, inherited, neurological disorder with a prevalence of 0.04%-0.05%, and characterized by tics and phonic sounds which can only be somewhat alleviated by conventional pharmacological therapy, since between 70% to 80% of patients discontinue their medication due to its dramatic adverse effects which include parkinsonian symptoms and irreversible tardive dyskinesia. However, a segregation analysis has shown that Tourette's syndrome acquisition is not consistent with Mendelian inheritance, replicated epidemiological studies have set its prevalence at 3%, and recent clinical case studies demonstrate that different forms of hypnotherapy for its treatment have actually resulted in symptom remission. Therefore this paper reviews and compares the effectiveness of hypnotherapy in the treatment of Tourette's with respect to current conventional pharmacological therapies, additionally to setting forth two hypnotherapy protocols for use in familial and non-familial cases as a baseline for health professionals.
