Abstract     Percutaneous kidney biopsy is an important diagnostic technique in clinical nephrology. Apart from information regarding the nature of a disease it also helps us decide on the treatment and the prognosis of the disease. Kidney biopsies have been carried out at our department since 1994. The biopsy is performed using an automatic biopsy device - a "pistol" (Bard Biopty) which triggers a modified Tru-Cut needle by means of a spring. Needles of 18 G (1.2 mm) thickness and varying length (16-24 cm) are used. The biopsies are performed under US control (an ATL HDI 3000 device), using a convex 2-4 Mhz probe and needle guide. Until 1996, 18 kidney biopsies were carried out, 16 times in the inferior pole of the left kidney and twice in the inferior pole of the right kidney. The biopsies were done in 5 female and 13 male patients. The average patient age was 39 (14.8 years (a span of 18-67 years). On the average, one kidney was punctured 2.6 times (2-4 times). In each patient, the tissue for light microscopy contained an average of 18.8 glomerules (a span of 7-33 glomerules). Apart from microhematuria, no other complications were noted. Following biopsy, a routine US control is carried out (US with real-time image, color Dopler image and "power imaging"). Percutaneous kidney biopsy with a "pistol" and under US control is a simple method for kidney biopsy. A single person can carry it out in a short time. Obtained with an 18 G needle the tissue sample is satisfactory. Complications are rare.
