Abstract     Transjugular renal biopsy (TJRB) is a new method designed to obtain kidney bioptic specimen exploiting the transjugular route. Bleeding disorders contraindicating percutaneous renal biopsy represent the main indication for the use of TJRB. Combined kidney and liver biopsy, patient's poor background, morbid obesity are other possible indications. Forty-eight patients, mean age 58 years, were investigated. Thirty-two patients had renal insufficiency, 13 out of them were dialyzed. Combined renal and liver biopsy (42%) and bleeding disorders (35%) were major indications. Renal biopsy sample was diagnostically useful in 35 patients (73%) with variety histological findings. Clinically significant complications were recorded in 6 patients (12.5%), i.e. perirenal haematoma 4x and persistent hematuria 2x. Five out of them required transfusion, in one case even open surgical haemostasis had been required. All these complicated patients showed severe clotting disorders and 4 of them had small contracted kidney. We conclude that TJRB may be a useful procedure in selected group of patients and may intluence significantly the treatment decision.
