Abstract     The objective of this retrospective study is the 30 years survey of renal transplantation in our country. In Slovenia (2 million inhabitants) all renal transplantations have been performed at the University Medical Center of Ljubljana. First renal transplantation from living related donor was done in 1970. Until July 30, 2000, 124 patients received living related kidney, and 273 patients cadaveric related kidney. Number of cadaveric donor transplants per year was low until National cadaveric organ donation program was established 2 years ago. From January 2000, Slovenia has become an active member of Eurotransplant. In the first 7 months (January 1st to July 30th) of the membership 34 renal transplantations were performed. 25 kidneys were shipped, 9 local. Current immunosuppression is: Cy-Neoral, MMF-CeIICept, Simulect (basilximab), methylprednisolone, and in the case of Cy-Neoral side effects, tacrolimus. 124 patients (88 men, 36 women), aged from 6 to 53 years, were given living related donor kidneys; 89 recipients were from our country, and 34 were foreigners. Number of living related donor transplantations per year declined after 1986. Living related donors were parents (91), siblings (31), and grand parents (2); their age ranged from 23 to 79 years (mean 51+-13 years). Regular cadaveric renal transplantations have not been carried out before 1986. In the studied period 273 patients (156 men, 117 women), aged from 9 to 65 years mean 40+-12 years) received kidney grafts from the cadaveric donors. All but 2 recipients were from our country. At the end of 1999 there were 1128 dialysis patients in Slovenia, 135 (12 %) of them were on kidney waiting list. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters.)
