Abstract     Pruritus is a common unpleasant sensation, accompanied frequently by scratching. This symptom can be caused by numerous cutaneous diseases and by internal disorders. Pruritus is mediated by histamine, proteases, prostaglandins, and substance P. The biochemical, cellular mechanisms and the neuroanatomical pathway which determine the outbreak of pruritus in different internal diseases are described. The exact diagnosis is important for choosing an appropriate treatment.
