Abstract     Laser-based spectroscopic techniques have proved to be a very efficient tool for monitoring of the atmosphere and for environmental remote sensing. One of them is LIDAR technique, which is based on the backscattering of laser light on particles and molecules in the atmosphere. With the LIDAR system built up at Nova Gorica Polytechnic, measurements up to the distance of 25 km can be made, with resolution of about two meters. Detection of aerosols and the measurements of attenuation length were performed in the UV range (lambda = 355nm). Differential LIDAR method in the visible range was adopted for the measurements of concentrations of N02. The system presented in this paper is useful for the monitoring of air quality in the vicinity of industrial enterprises and in urban areas, where environmentally harmful substances are released into the atmosphere.
