Abstract     Because of the possibility of illegal use of chloramphenicol, regulatory control over its residues in food of animal origin is essential. In our institute this analytics is performed with capillary gas chromatography using electron capture detection (ECD) after the silylation of cleaned extract. After the addition of internal standard chloramphenicol is extracted from muscle tissue into water and from eggs into ethyl acetate. Fat is effectively removed by n-hexane. An additional clean-up with Extrelut columns is used for muscle tissue and milk. Average recoveries corrected for internal standard are in the region of 86 - 102 %. Limit of detection is of about 1 microg/kg. 1208 samples of Slovenian origin were analysed from 1991 to 1999. Chloramphenicol was found in one milk sample.
