Abstract     Plant tissue cultures represent an alternative source of secondary metabolites production. The cells, calli or organs can be grown in bioreactors. Natural insecticides pyrethrins, also belong to the group of secondary metabolites. They can be found in high concentrations in the flowers of Tanacetum cinerariefolium. We studied the possibility of pyrethrins production in tissue culture. Callus culture was successfully induced from the flower parts. Further on the cell suspension cultures were established. Pyrethrins were detected in four calli and three suspension lines. Their content was, as expected, lower in tissue culture than in plants grown in vivo. The experiments to increase the synthesis of pyrethrins in tissue culture by a number of factors are in progress.
