Abstract		Since its clinical inception around 17 years ago, endoscopic ultrasonography has developed into an established technique for obtaining additional diagnostic information to supplement the findings of other conventional imaging methods in specific applications. Knowledge of the sonographic anatomy of the anal canal and surrounding structures is the prerequisite for successful application of EUS for diagnosis of anorectal disorders. EUS is useful in the staging and follow-up of anal carcinoma. EUS is very helpful in diagnosing anorectal fistulas and abscesses. An increasing number of investigators consider anal incontinence to be an indication for endorectal ultrasonography.
