Abstract     The function of anorectum is extremely precise and complex. The author turns attention to less known characteristics of its physiology. Firstly, to the mass movement (multihaustral contraction) of the large bowel and its role in preparation of normal defecation; secondly, to the sampling response, which helps us detect the nature of the bowel content. Finally, to inervation of the anorectum. In spite of regional spinal anesthesy some feeling of pain is preserved.
