Abstract     Rectal prolapse is an intussusception of the upper rectum and rectosigmoid. It may be occult i.e. internal, mucosal, or complete i.e. external. Its cause is still not completely understood. More than 100 procedures have been described for the treatment of rectal prolapse. A thorough history and physical exam should be done to diagnose all areas of pelvic prolapse. The surgical treatment then should be individualized to correct each pelvic prolapse defect. The goals of surgery are fixation of the rectum to the sacrum, improving symptoms of fecal incontinence and constipation and minimal postoperative morbidity. The choice of operation is determined by the degree of prolapse present, associated disorders, co-morbid conditions, and the symptoms that prompted the patient to seek medical attention. Abdominal operation is considered the best choice for low risk patients. We reviewed our experience treating total rectal prolapse at Dr. Peter Držaj Hospital in Ljubljana during last ten years. The procedure of choice was abdominal rectopexy in 24 cases, Delorme procedure in four cases. Patients treated these two ways were fairly satisfied regarding prolaps, complaining mostly about constipation and rarely about minor incontinence.
