Abstract		Traditional indications for permanent cardiac pacing of bradyarrhythmias and atrioventricular conduction disturbances have been changed in the last years due to new knowledge of the natural course of the disease and electrophysiological diagnostic possibilities. New indications have been added like vasovagal syncope and long QT syndrome. Some new, partly experimental methods like prevention of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, pacing in hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy and dilated cardiomyopathy, and non-invasive rejection monitoring of cardiac transplants are under clinical investigations.
