Abstract     Technologic advances in two-dimensional and Doppler ultrasound have permitted echocardiography to assume an integral role in the evaluation and management of patients with cardiac rhythm disturbances. Transthoracic echocardiography and transesophageal echocardiography provide detailed information about atrial and ventricular anatomy and function, they detect spontaneous echo contrast and thrombi. These data help in the evaluation and management of patients with atrial fibrillation. A new approach to the management of patients with atrial fibrillation is transesophageal echocardiography guided early cardioversion with a modified anticoagulation management.
