Abstract     Atrial fibrillation is the most common of the serious cardiac rhythm disturbances and responsible for a substantial part of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in the general population. Because its hazards are difficult to control once established, a preventive approach to the problem is required. In order to prevent atrial fibrillation, it is necessary to know the conditions that predispose to its development. It is most commonly seen in hypertensive, coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, heart failure, cardiothoracic surgery, and pericarditis. It can be triggered by alcohol intake, medical procedures, and neurohormonal disorders.
