Abstract		Approximately 3000 children under the age of eighteen in Slovenia are seriously mentally and physically handicapped, and about 4700 adults have a similar diagnosis. In addition to a serious mental condition, many of these individuals suffer from various systemic illnesses. An estimated 15 % of mentally handicapped persons require general anaesthesia for dental treatment. When a mentally and physically handicapped child is offered dental care under general anaesthesia, the complete dental treatment is provided. The main aims of such treatment are to prevent further pain, to repair all decayed teeth, and to restore optimal masticatory function.
