Abstract     This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of grinding and sandblasting on biaxial flexural strength and reliability of zirconia ceramics. Yttria stabilized ZrO2 powder was used to produce 40 disc-shaped specimens, which were divided into four groups of ten. In three groups, different surface treatments were applied: grinding, sandblasting, grinding plus sandblasting. The remaining ten specimens served as the control group. Biaxial flexural strength was determined, and the data were analysed using one way ANOVA. Reliability was tested with Weibull statistics. Grinding reduced the mean strength and the Weibull modulus, whereas sandblasting increased the strength at the expense of lower reliability. Grinding may lead to substantial strength degradation and reduced reliability of prefabricated zirconia elements. Therefore, sandblasting of ground surfaces is recommended.
