Abstract     Most microorganisms responsible for caries and periodontitis can only survive in the oral cavity when they adhere to non-shedding surfaces. The roughness of intraoral hard surfaces is of clinical importance for bacterial retention. As shown by in vivo experiments, a surface roughness value of 0.2 micro m is the threshold below which no further reduction in bacterial retention can be expected. We used a profilometer to assess the surface roughness of dental enamel after grinding with different diamond burs, after two different polishing procedures and after application of dental adhesive coating. The data were analysed against the threshold value of 0.2 micro m. Polishing with Sof-Lex discs gave significantly better results than polishing with abrasive rubber cup. Adhesive coating applied over the ground enamel significantly decreased the roughness of the enamel surface.
