Abstract     The aim of our work is to present a non invasive measuring method for measuring of biomechanical characteristics of skeletal muscles which is selective and can be used for measuring of voluntary or electrical stimulated contractions of all surface skeletal muscles. Measuring method was developed at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Ljubljana. Displacement sensor is pressed to the skin radial to the muscle surface. The muscle is stimulated with short single electrical impulses via surface self-adhesive electrodes. From muscle response on such stimulation a skeletal muscles properties can be determined. Previous studies reveal maximum displacement of measured muscle belly and the torque above adequate joint as a response to short stimulation impulses to increase proportionally with higher stimulation voltage. Also a high correlation between torque and displacement of muscle belly themselves has been shown. Contraction time of muscle belly response has been defined as time between 10% and 90% of maximum displacement during increasing of muscle belly displacement. It is highly correlated with percentage of type I muscle fibers inside measured muscle. Histological analysis for the study has been made by dr. Raja Dahmane, M. Sc., at the Anatomic institute in Ljubljana as part of her dissertation. The results of measurements have been used at the Institute of Republic of Slovenia for Rehabilitation for several years for measurements on persons after amputation and patients with different neuromuscular diseases. During past years an intensive work has been done on measurements of professional athletes. Results of the measurements are used for improving of sports training process.
